CINEMA ON WAVES

Every summer we go to the seaside.
The easiest way to get there in Ukraine is Odesa — one of the top-5 biggest cities located at the Black Sea shore and connected to other cities by highways and railways. But just once there was a possibility to visit the largest cinema on water in the world.

During the COVID-19 quarantine and restrictions of public events there were hard times for cinema lovers. Every summer we used to go to Odesa International Film Festival — the main film festival in Ukraine, but not this time. Nevertheless we decided to bring the happiness of watching movies with friends in unusual way — on the waves.
It was the easiest way to keep the distance between people and the hardest one to organise this as comfortable as favourite cinemas.
YACHT CLUB “CHORNOMORSKY”
The event took place in the historical place — yacht club ‘Chornomorsky’ founded in 1875. The movie screening was organised right on the sea waves but the event started on the way there. People had a parking booked for them and golf cars that took them right to the event spot 1 km from there. No one knew what to expect next.
1.sea
The main ‘cinema hall’ with 75 white boats produced exclusively for the event and 10 yachts for influencers companies. Each guest was wearing a life-vest designed for the event and had a special kit to feel themselves more comfortable on waves — packed fruits and pop corn, drinks, sanitizers and napkins, nausea pills and small flashlight to ask for any assistance being in the boat. Each boat had sitting pillows and blankets to feel warmer and softer to sit for couple of hours.
Everybody could leave their shoes at the wardrobe or keep with them in the boat in special bag. If someone was tired of staying in the water, assistants on motorboats were picking them up from the line and helping to park near the pier.
2.coast
We built a wooden pier looked like a terrace and put sunbeds for hundred more people. There was a surf-style photo-zone and a food court with burgers and hotdogs, ice cream and drinks.
From the beginning of the event we started the live broadcast right from the event location using the mobile studio organised  in the collaboration with Prosto Radio. Two hosts including the owner of the radio station told about the event rules mixing it up with the usual lifestyle content.
3.road
As it was noticed previously, Odesa is one of the most popular direction to go to the sea side in Ukraine. So we knew that lots of event guests will go from Kyiv to Odesa for the weekend. This fact pushed us to create three ‘pit stops’ on the Kyiv-Odesa highway to give even more experience to people on their way.
There were two photo-zones organised in fields — the one with haystacks colored white and the another one with several boats ‘gliding’ up the sunflowers. Both points had non-alcohol bars too. And the third point was located at the partner petrol station — our guest got special gifts there.
The event was free to visit but people needed to be pre-registered and to win the invitation by random choice. So the total quantity was limited by 400 places for two days. And over 3000 people applied to visit the event. They didn’t know how the cinema would be look like so the whole concept was a total shock for them and became the most discussable project of the year.
